Le Guess Who? introduces part 12: Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks

Do we really need to introduce Stephen Malkmus, you ask? Yes, he is the leadsinger of Pavement. But while Pacement has only done one reunion tour in 2010, Stephen Malkmus continues to evolve and experiment, toying with synthesizers and electronics and with shape-shifting prog-rock, both solo and with his band The Jicks.

After having released four solo-albums, Malkmus worked together with Beck on his latest record Mirror Traffic. Read here what Malkmus told Pitchfork about their collaboration and the result:

"He just called me and said he was [thinking of producing some records]. It was the second or third thing he said; it wasn't strategic or anything. He was just like, "I'm doing this now." I wasn't really aware that he was producing because he's been on a path of making albums and recording and touring for 20 years, too. I would've thought of doing something with him, but not as a producer. But when something comes out of the blue like that, you're like, "That makes sense."

"I was into what [Beck] had to say, completely. It was just great to have someone there that's positive, saying, 'Okay, here's where we are now, we're this far, we're going to take this ship home,' and to not have to bother yourself with the production side of things. You just play and be yourself, be more your musical self than your technical self, which I suppose can cloud up your vision or your performances a little bit."

"For this album, it was going to be about the songs and vocals a bit more. Everyone plays into that L.A. cookie-cutter thing, where the band is more like a quasi-wrecking crew, and you're just doing what the song needs. Maybe all of our personalities might not come out as much on our instruments, but the songs are going to live more. That's what will really last."

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks have released a video for their single, “Senator”, which touts the wry and accurate opening line, “I know what the senator wants/what the senator wants is a blowjob.” The video was produced by “The Daily Show” writer Scott Jacobson, and, along with Jack Black, features the boss from Office Space, Gary Cole, on guitar. Enjoy!

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks will be performing at Le Guess Who? at Thursday November 24th. Get your tickets and more information here.
